Palermo didn’t get any better. Enough said! Apparently, there are some big families here that control most of the stuff (as well as murdering a few judges and things like that). Well, if that’s true it’s a pity they don’t get some of the kids out picking up all the rubbish. The place is a tip!
We’d decide to leave early (06.00) but, as I woke up at 04.30, I decided to prepare the boat myself and see if I could start the engines and leave without waking Sleeping Beauty up.
There’s a lot to do before you leave a port. Start the nav computer, sort out the route, disconnect the shore power cables, remove the spring lines, attach a slip line, remove the main aft lines, put the kettle on, make a coffee ….etc.
Anyway, I did it and was just leaving the marina before Mr. V appeared. It was 5.45 am!
We were off to Lipari (pronounce Leepery- like slippery) which is the largest of the volcanic islands about 35 miles north of Messina (check it out on Google Earth). Only a short journey today – just nine hours!
These islands are stunning. They rise straight out of the sea and are far more dramatic than the photos can show.
Lipari is beautiful. Set against the lush, green mountain side, the town has been here since 3000BC. They’ve kept it nice though! The people are so friendly and the taxi driver proudly told us that there was no crime here. A true paradise!
Went for a little trip round Vulcano, the neighbouring island today (Mon) and here are some more piccies to prove it!
We were 30 feet away from this and it was 240ft deep! |

Jayne and Ros are joining us there on Tuesday 21st so let’s hope we have some nice weather for the crossing. ‘Cos it’s a long way!
Very impressed by the smoking landscape. Wish I was with you to see Stromboli. Hope you get calm sea so you can get a good pic of the 'fireworks'!
ReplyDeleteLove Ros

ReplyDeleteIn case you're interested - we are also about to go on our second trip - France by Rocket - only a long w/e this time - so a meer breeze compared with the 2500+ miles European trip last time!
So continued Bon voyage and hope to see you soonish and Jayne soonerbefore she goes - if she's recovered from all her partying ;-) love from me n 'im xx
Hi Martin,
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are having fun.
Hows this for a spooky coincidence...I too have just finished reading the same book about the stag night coffin..etc, great book "Dead Simple by Peter James"
What is even more spooky is the thought of two men alone on a boat...relieved to read that your other halves are soon to join you.
Anyway, keep up the blog, very entertaining!
Pete Taylor (Britannia)
Fabulous scenery - and them tuna look so appetising! Please don't give out any more clues regarding 'Dead Simple'. Pat is halfway through it!!! Hope you can get some pics of the volcano - although I'm not sure that either of the Martins are reading these comments!!!!
ReplyDeleteHello! I've had a few stabs at posting on this - hopefully this one works! I'm the bride - not so blushing, more stressing ;-) Anyway - this blog is fantastic and I can't wait to meet you all - and of course, can't wait to see my lovely cousin Jayne, so - safe trip - I will ensure there are ice cold Mythos beers waiting for your arrival!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Lynsey! I'm glad I am not the only one having trouble posting comments! I think I have cracked it now! Can't wait to meet you specially with the thought of a cold local beer waiting. Everyone tells me Kefalonia is a lovely island. Never been to Greece or Greek Islands before.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to both Martins for the final long crossing. See you Tuesday. Love Ros XX
