Skorpios |
At 11.00 am we left Spatakhori and headed over to Vlikho, passing Skorpios as we went. This beautiful island was bought by Aristotle Onassis in the ‘60’s, apparently for a song (bet it was ‘She Loves You’ – best song ever!). He’s a lucky bugger (well, not that lucky as he’s dead now, along with most of his family) but there are still around 20 permanent staff on the island tending the gardens and houses. You aren’t allowed to set foot on the island as there’s a very sophisticated surveillance system in place that can detect anyone’s foot! We didn’t test it.
And so on to Vlikho, which is a large (very large) land-locked inlet – very safe, and very protected. We anchored up brilliantly, of course, along with hundreds of other yachts but it felt very much like being on a lake. Nice though.
In the evening we took the tender in to Dimitri’s Taverna, which I’d read about in me boat mag. and it was great. Best meal yet!

On our way..... |
After a good night’s kip we set off for the most exciting bit, which was travelling through the Lefkas canal, which is about three miles long, on our way to Preveza. The bridge at the north end opens on the hour, every hour so we tried to time it so that we wouldn’t have to mill about with the other boats waiting for it to open. Unfortunately, we left a bit late, as Mr Vaughan had to have his cornflakes and cup of tea before we could get anything out of him. This resulted in us having to do seven knots through the canal in order to hit the 10am opening. The speed limit is four knots, so please don’t mention it to anybody. Ta!
Such skill! |
The 'exit' to the canal, on the left. It's quite shallow! |
And on to Preveza. Not a brilliant place but we’ve managed to tie up alongside the town so it’s not too bad. Apart from the little whizzy motorbikes which keep hurtling past! And if you can read this, I’ve found an internet café!
We were going to stay here for two nights but we’ve decided to up-sticks tomorrow and head off to Andipaxos and Paxos. It’s supposed to be fantastic! I’ll let you know…
Yeah....thought so. You've got a bit ahead of me by doing 7 knots up the canal. I have to report it obviously. Just left a comment on Babi the retard, and up comes this new bit. You'll have to slow down man. "Babi and the Retards" hmmm.....band name potential? Whaddya think Russ?
ReplyDeleteSo you're heading for Andipaxos. That....since you won't know....is where they make the instant stuffing. You just add water. But in Paxos the stuffing is done in a more traditonal manner. Don't ask. The only hint I'll give you is the women there don't get much in the way of foreplay. And so you'll need a turkey then. Well lucky you!! As it happens Greece has one next door. They don't like each other though so be warned!
Skorpios sounds nice. I reckon you should have landed, and tested their surveillance. Infested with skorpions most likely.
I like the look of that lake. You done any swimming? Any fishing to be had? Oh....can't you tell us what you had to eat at Dimitri's place? Us foodies are dying to know!
Best meal yet. What was it?? C'mon.....tell us will ya?
Hi Dad, think I've finally figured out how to post a comment! Sounds like you are still 'living the dream'! Agree with uncle J - what did you eat? Missing you now, so will look forward to seeing you next Saturday, even though you won't have slept - I'm sure you'll still be buzzing from your adventure!
ReplyDeleteHave fun xxx
I remember the Levcas canal but don't remember an opening bridge. Is it new? Mind you it was abut 15 years ago. I do remember mooring up in high katabatic (downhill) winds blowing directly on to the morings in Levcas on our return form the stuffing islands! I think they cakll it the Bora out there - like the 1970s Maserati. A bit hairy to say the least. At least we were relatively comfortable on our nooring having half a ton of lead or somethoing heavy on the bottom of our keel. All the motor cruisers were bobbing about like corks so I hope you don't suffer with wind!

ReplyDeleteAlan, I think they do suffer with wind because of Martin's insistence at putting kidney beans in his chilli, and as for his 3 bean bake thingy, it's trouser trumpets at the ready!!
