We did not like Preveza! Not at all. Not even a tiny bit! The problem was that we were alongside the town quay but slightly out of town. We thought it might be quieter but just how wrong can you be? Dead wrong, is what! The building you can see in the distance, past the rubbish bins and just after the derelict building, is a night club, or rather, an all-night club. With added motorbikes roaring up and down at 4.00am in the morning and the club thumping out some sort of crap-rap, it was not nice. And it was ALL night!
So with little sleep, we decided to leave early. Which was not a problem this time as no one had really slept – not even Mr. V!
Leaving Preveza (thank God) |
So off we went to Paxos, which took about four hours. Some of us slept on the way but I didn’t, and Jayne didn’t and I’m sure Ros didn’t. But can you guess who did?
On arrival we found a secluded and protected bay called Mongonissi. It was beautiful and - it had a Taverna! Does it get any better?
My favourite view from my favourite place! |
The sea's out there somewhere. |
Today we went to Antipaxos and moored off a beach but I should mention here that we are having trouble with our anchor. It’s coming in really slowly, keeps stopping, and there’s a distinct smell of burnt-out motor. Not good.
When we got back we were so worried that we decided to use our second anchor (doesn’t every boat have two?) but it is much smaller and lighter and, as the wind got up, it started to drag. This always scares the life out of me. We took off for Gaios, about 2 miles away, and we had 20 knots of wind – a good force 5! We milled about off the town quay, got in the way of ferries, tried to moor illegally, got shouted at, nearly ran aground – all the usual stuff! So, in the end, we had to high-tail it back to Mongonissi.
We’ve used the big anchor again as it ‘lets out’ (technical term!) easily enough but will we ever get it back? Or will we have to stay here forever? Or will we have to hacksaw the chain and anchor off? And what will I have to eat in the Taverna tonight?Tune in, in a few days time, to find out!
I seem to recall this happening before (the anchor thing) - particularly when there was a lot of anchor out. You had to wind it in a bit at a time because the motor overheated and refused to go any further. I've an idea that John had to sit in the well where the chain gathers to make sure it didn't get snarled up as it came in. That may have been Doris of course but I'm pretty sure it was Kuna.
ReplyDeleteAnchors - the bane of my life. Myself and a mate (Tony Russell) usually get lumbered with cobbing out the kedge anchor and even worse fetching it back in again which is difficult as it doesn't have a winch (manual or electric) so it can be a bit heavy. Good to hear you are enjoying Paxos and Anti-Paxos. We liked it very much despite the Greek cop pulling a revolver on us (very subtle but it worked) for parking in the ferry lane. Sounds as though you had a similar experience! I seem to remember the sea bed off Anti-Paxos being very sandy and not holding an anchor very well. We had plenty of experience dumping it and hauling it up again several times what with the revolver experience and ther being little mooring space in the bay.
ReplyDeleteDid you see any green turtles? We didn't, they're about as elusive as a greek tax-payer!
